Parenthood vs. Career In Law, Construction, & Insurance

Introduction

Parenthood impedes on career development, a fact that women and other primary caregivers in law, construction, and insurance are acutely aware of. While there are plenty of ways an employer can offer a more flexible work-life- balance for working parents, many people find themselves penalized for utilizing these privileges. High stress industries call for near- constant availability, often using this standard as a measure of commitment and productivity. Parents who utilize accommodations to make their work-life balance tolerable all too often see consequences. Parents who are attorneys, architects, and underwriters alike often feel like they must choose between parenthood and advancing their career, and yet there are some who still shine despite the uphill battle. Our panel of professionals will discuss their personal experiences with parenthood and their careers in law, construction, and insurance respectively. Our discussion hopes to raise continued conversations on the barriers that exist for parents in each industry and give advice to those looking to overcome similar hurdles.
